The Singapore University of Technology and Design and the Centre for Climate Adaptation hosted a three-part event within the framework of Singapore International Water Week 2026. Condensations 2026 advanced a clear agenda: use design to strengthen coastal protection while sustaining the ecological and public life of the shoreline, connecting flood resilience, water management, habitat and inhabitation.

The East Coast brief provided a concrete field of work. It asked how interventions distributed across different sites and responsibilities can contribute to a coherent coastal system. The symposium examined governance and value; the exhibition made territorial strategies and material investigations available for public scrutiny; the workshop translated the brief into site readings, architectural studies and group propositions.

01 · The Symposium

15 June 2026 · SUTD Campus Centre

The symposium established the programme's public agenda: how governance, water systems and collective value should inform coastal adaptation. Participants brought perspectives from design, public agencies, urban practice and finance to the question of a coherent, long-term response.

  • Matthijs Bouw, Founder, One Architecture & Urbanism
  • Laurian Farrell, Deputy Commissioner for Coastal Resilience, NYC DEP
  • Ridzuan Ismail, Director, Flood Resilience Planning, PUB
  • Sourav Majumder, Senior Project Officer (Urban Development), ADB
  • Henk Ovink, Executive Director, Global Commission on the Economics of Water

Opening by Khoo Peng Beng. Moderated by Ar. Tiah Nan Chyuan. Closing by David Erdman.

02 · The Exhibition

16–18 June 2026 · Marina Bay Sands

At Marina Bay Sands, the exhibition placed CCA's territorial plans, research plates and physical model within SIWW. It connected the scale of a changing coastline to investigations of reservoirs, ecological interfaces and modular coastal components, including Generative Coastlines, Reveries of a Moving Edge and the Living Lab research S.H.I.E.L.D. The exhibited work provided a research basis for discussion, rather than a claim that the proposals were ready for construction.

03 · The Workshop

19–23 June 2026 · SUTD

The East Coast was the workshop's field for developing design-led approaches to coastal protection. The five-day brief brought territorial reading, technical context and group propositions into one programme, asking participants to consider architecture as shelter and infrastructure: bringing retention, filtration and recirculation into relation with occupation and public life.

  1. Ground the question: briefing, site context, coastal processes and initial research strategy.
  2. Build a reading: data, transect mapping, AI PEER and the refinement of a problem statement.
  3. Develop the proposal: design, 3D modelling, tutorials and the allocation of group tasks.
  4. Make it discussable: drawings, fabrication preparation, prototyping and presentation material.
  5. Present and reflect: group presentations and an invited review of the proposals.
